Old Settlers' Days
June 20-22, 2025 | Highmore, SD

The community of Highmore holds Old Settlers' Weekend annually the third weekend in June. It is set for June 20, 21 and 22 for 2025.


The HHS All-school reunion will be in 2025! If you registered for the 2020 reunion and paid, your money will be applied to the 2025 registration. You may contact the committee if you have another preference.

The community of Highmore comes together each year to offer a variety of different events. Our goal is to make Old Settlers' Weekend fun for the whole family.

This was our 2024 schedule. Watch for updates for the 2025 event. They should be posted around June 1, 2025.  If you're having a class reunion, please call Mary Ann at the Highmore Herald 605-870-2927 to schedule a class picture.


 6:30 P.M. Music on the Porch

9 - 11 A.M. Rolls and Coffee

11:30 A.M. Lunch at the Senior Center

5 P.M. Class of 1974 Reunion at Golf Course

6 P.M. Women's Civic League program

The program will include coronation of the king and queen and a children's play. The Highmore Area Council of the Arts and Dakota Players invite everyone to an evening of fun and entertainment when Highmore Harrold students present On the Road to Bremen Town. The performance is the culmination of a unique learning experience for a number of children from Highmore Harrold School. The special week long event gives children a chance to learn what it is like to take part in a professionally produced stage musical, from auditions and rehearsals through the final performance.


The performance is FREE and open to the public. The play will last approximately 40 minutes.

7 P.M. SD Farmers Union Bull Bash

Highmore Civic and Commerce hosts the annual SD Farmer's Union Bull Bash. Gates open at 6 p.m. Calcutta at 7 p.m. Bull riding to follow. Food/concession will be offered by the Knight's of Columbus. No coolers. Entry fee for spectators is $10. Nine and under is free. There will be a candy scramble for the kids. This is a TPBR sanctioned event. Call 605-222-0267 to register to ride.

8 A.M. 5K Road Race/2-mile Walk

Register by 7:45 a.m. at the South Park (pool park). The route starts and ends at South Park. There is a participation fee of $10 which includes a t-shirt.

9 - 11 A.M. Rolls and Coffee at the Senior Center

10 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Art Show

The annual art show at 118 Commercial Ave will feature artwork and photos by Jody Landgrebe,  Dan Deuter, Lynn Johnson, Kat Deuter, Mike Parker, Miranda Thomas, Del Iron Cloud, Jennifer White, vintage quilts, Ms. Hyde's high school students, photos from the filming of Dances with Wolves and more. 


At 1:30 p.m.  Bill Markley will be speaking about his roll in the movie Dances with Wolves. Markley was involved as a reenactor in the film and appeared in scenes of the opening Civil War, Fort Hays scene and the final scene where the cavalry searched for the Lakota village in Spearfish Canyon. The Fort Hays scenes were filmed southwest of Highmore near Highway 34 and the Ross Hyde Ranch. Markley kept a journal and has published it as Dakota Epid. Bill Markley will have his books available for sale. A Q&A will follow Markley's program as well as an open mic. Deb Hyde's collection of the filming of Dances with Wolves photos will be exhibited as well as photos of Conor Duffy (Mary Garrigan) who was in the massacre scene. This free program is open to the public and is sponsored by the South Dakota Humanities Council, HACOTA and Jan Busse Ford.

10:30 A.M. Parade; the theme is: Celebrate Summer

Floats line-up east of Highmore Health; no preregistration required. The parade travels west to commercial avenue, north to first street, turns west to Iowa Ave and South to the school. Floats are to enter on the west side of Highmore Health; no one is allowed to enter from the south on Ash Ave.  Parking is available for horse trailers north of Lutheran Church on 4th street.

11 A.M. - 5 P.M. Vendor Fair

11 A.M. - 3 P.M. Little Pirates Childcare Open House

Free will BBQ or hot dog on the corner of Iowa Ave and Third Street.

11:30 A.M. - 4 P.M. Train display

Todd Marks will have his train set on display in the main arena of Hyde County Memorial Auditorium.

11:30 A.M. - 1:30 P.M. Lunch at the Senior Center

Food Trucks

The Rolling Stoves will also be serving food throughout the weekend, keep an eye on their Facebook page for details.

Brewbirds Coffee and More plans to set up by Vilas Pharmacy, near Commercial Ave, on Saturday.

12 P.M. Class of 1964 Reunion in the West Wing of the Auditorium

12 P.M. Class of 1969 Reunion in the East Wing of the Auditorium

1 - 4 P.M. Inflatables in the Auditorium

No food or drink, please. Adult supervision required.

2 P.M Bingo at the Senior Center

2 P.M. - 4 P.M. Open House at Historical Society Museum

Free popsicles served. Highmore's first schoolhouse open 2 - 4 P.M on fourth street, on the north side of the current school.

3 - 5 P.M. Jan Busse Ford Car Show

Located on Commercial Ave; registration will begin at 2:00 (no fee to enter). There are 9 categories to enter and win (best and outstanding). Trophies will be awarded. There is also a Best of Show and  People's Choice awarded.

3:30 P.M. Minnow Races at Chahl's Bar and Grill

5:30 P.M. Class of 1984 Reunion at the Golf Course

5:30 - 7:30 P.M. Rib Cook-off

Old Settlers' Weekend is a community effort, put on by volunteers from a variety of groups, organizations and businesses. Each year, we seek individuals to assist us with the tasks it takes to make Old Settlers' Weekend a great experience for all. This takes many amazing volunteers. Even an hour is enough.
